What is place-based publishing?
Place-based publishing anchors stories, illustrations, and learning in real life locations. Here & There focuses on publishing content curated for children and families. Place-based publications are rich with opportunities to share unique landmarks, seasons, traditions, and natural world of a local community and create a genuine connection for young readers to “their place.” These books spark curiosity, belonging, and stewardship from the first page to the next hometown adventure.
How our Garbage Goat & Kid series brings Spokane to life?

Spokane's Storytellers
Garbage Goat, our one-of-a-kind city icon, and Kid, an ever-curious young goat, guide readers through beloved Spokane landmarks and traditions—turning each season into an opportunity for shared discovery.
Adventures through the Seasons
Readers experience classic Spokane seasonal moments: playing in Riverfront Park, exploring an apple orchard, making snow-goats, smelling spring blooms, and joining in community events. Each page invites children to step outside and see their world with wonder and excitment.

Intergenerational Exploration
As families journey through the story, they’re inspired to share memories and create new traditions together. This book connects across generations, offering a meaningful way to build belonging through shared experience and place.
From Mundane to Magical
What begins as everyday activity becomes the stuff of lasting childhood memory. With Garbage Goat and Kid as their guides, young readers discover that wonder and adventure are waiting in even the most familiar places.

Roots and Wings
Rooted in Spokane’s traditions, public art, and seasonal rhythms, these stories nurture a deep sense of place—and give children the confidence to explore, care for, and celebrate the hometown they call their own.
